Fanaa : A Movie Review

Frankly, I was not at all excited about this movie. But couldn’t help myself watching this flick as the whole nation is getting fanaatic about it.
God knows why Gujrat banned this movie. If tomorrow Irfan Pathan says something about their river, may be they will turn their heads while watching a cricket when he comes to bowl.. or may they’ll ban Cricket in Gujrat. Sometimes I think it may be a just another publicity stunt.
Who knows and who cares..

Back to Fanna.
I’m a software engineer and we follow processes to buid good software. And I do not find Yash Uncle (thats what his heroines call him) any different from my Project Manager. No matter who directs his movie, you can clearly see the Yash Chopra stamp.
He has a formula, a model, a process and a team of good developers.. oops.. good directors.
Watch Hum-Tum and tell me if the same director has directed Fanaa. Kunal Kohli just put the right ingredients in Yash Uncle’s recipe and dishes out one delicious product.

Something about the movie..
You may skip this block if you don’t want to know the story.
Fanaa is a love story of a terrorist who falls in love with a blind girl and vanishes the day when that girl regains her sight. Pretending that he is dead, she continues her life with her kid for seven years. And one day, their paths cross again but then heart takes a back seat and mind drives the girl to take her decision.
Sounds interesting.

Now lets compare it with Veer-Zaara. Fanaa also has Indo-Pak backdrop, one patriotic song, highly adorable performances by lead pair, and some mindless stuff.
But as I said, the model works fine Indian audiences. So why bother changing it? Atleast you don’t have fear of loosing money by making an innovative movie. Let Ram Gopal Varma suffer alone.

Performances
Fanaa succeeded in arousing the interest of moviegoers mainly because of the casting of Aamir Khan opposite talented Kajol. And this duo do not disappoint at all. It’s a treat to watch versatile Aamir and sizzling Kajol together. Its worth your slightly hiked movie ticket.
Apart from these two, the one who will win hearts is a kid who played Kajol’s son. He is extremely cute and delivers his lines with an élan.
Rishi Kapoor and Kiran kher play Amitabh and Hema from Veer-Zaara. Keep wondering about these open-minded parents who allow their girl to sleep with her ‘Shehzada’ for a night.

My verdict
I know you hate stupid bollywood flicks and planning to watch Da Vinci Code this week-end.. but spare your next week-end for Fanna. Watch it for good locals of Kashmir, power packed performances by Aamir and Kajol and couple of melodious songs.
Its ok if you forget your thinking cap at home. You’ll not need it.
Watch it with family. Enjoy it with Popcorn (You can afford a popcorn cup because most likely you won’t be watching this movie in multiplex. Thanks to the unnecessary hype)
I give it 3 stars for good direction, great performances and catchy tunes.

Review on Ice Age: The Meltdown

I watched Ice Age 2 this weekend.
Its a nice movie and definately better than other stupid movies which released this week-end.
It doesn’t matter if you have watched the first part or not..
Story is fairly simple.
The ice starts to melt down, which ultimatley results into a huge flood.
And during this, a love story of a Mammoth flowers.
Don’t miss it..

Being Cyrus : Moview review

Its been more than couple of weeks when i watched Being Cyrus.
I didn’t find anything special in it, so prefered not to write any review on it.
But suddenly this film is getting popular..
Its grossing more than other english movies and is hit outside India.
I would have like it if it had come before 1-2 years.
It is a dark multiplex movie with a twist in the end.
But apart from good cinematography, there was nothing which impressed me.
Neither so called ‘dark humor’, nor so hyped Saif’s acting..
Anyways, my friend Abhijeet has managed to write a nice review on Being Cyrus.
Check it out..

Quote

Being Cyrus

Cast : Saif Ali Khan, Nasseruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Manoj Pahwa
Some movies have to be seen to believe how good they are . Being Cyrus falls in that category , the layers of the story peel off slowly and slowly and every time you see something more interesting coming your way.
Suave and polished Cyrus follows his soul into Dinshaw Sethna’s dilapidated house in Panchgani.
"Every happy family is happy in the same way, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own." – Leo Tolstoy says in Anna Karenina. Sethna’s are its perfect example and Cyrus is there to exploit their special way.
Good screenplay , good dialogues and perfect casting make the movie a treat to watch. Saif , Naseer , Boman sparkle in this dark tale of wit. Direction of the debutante Homi Adjania is neat.
But the surprise package of movie enters just before the intermission . Navneet Bubbly (Manoj Pahwa) , the neighbourhood cop who is all out to rid world of the crime or crime of the world , all in same breath . He and his assistant Thambe tickle your " disallocated " funny bone right down to the pelvic region. Pahwa who has been hugely popular as Bhatia in TV serial Office Office is the pitch perfect with all of his nuanced , subtle and understated dialogues.
Go, watch and fall in love with Sethna family and with their secrets , that’s my advice.
PS : At the end of the game both the King and the pawn go into the same box.( Loved this quote and its use in the story)

Take a joy ride with Taxi No 9211

I watched Taxi no 9211 this week-end.
Bollywood has certainly come out of the age. The movie making style has improved by leaps and bounds.
We no longer make movies based on star values, age old love stories, hundered dupatta-chunri songs and loud humor.
Now, movies are distributed as a commercial product, with sleek design, good production values, nice humor and innovative and meaningful stories.

Taxi no 9211 falls under this category.
The story is picked straight out of the real life. Charectorisation is just perfect. It couldn’t have any other combination better than Nana Patekar and John Abraham.
Movie has Bombay in the backdrop. It tells the story of one day in the life of two opposite personalities.
How they meet, collide and spoil their lives.
And the story ends with a message. Overall a nice product from Sippy’s production house after Bluff Master.

I don’t want to get into the story as i want you to enjoy the film. Its unpredictable and fun to watch. Songs are nice and Nana rocks the show. Watch out for Sonali Kulkarni as a middle class housewife. She is lokking sexier than ever. John is too good and looked confident for the first time while handeling intese sequences.

Don’t miss this movie. It entertains.

Its trailer is so impressinve that i couldnt resist myself from watching this flick.
But the show was disappointing.
Although script is good, excecution is not up to the mark.
I wonder how critics compared it with Harry Potter movies!
Magic is just not intuiting..
Avoid this movie.. specially if are a Harry Potter fan.
